Believe it or not, I do still write when I can squeeze in an hour here and there. I did not think in 2019 that it would take six or seven (maybe even ten) years to finish my next book. I have many books on my writing shelf to complete before I exit this earth. I also did not realize how consumed I would be with my business and personal life … and life keeps ticking along. I thought it would be good to share little tidbits of my next project with you as I move along with “In the King’s Service.”
This book is an account of my career(s) – a workforce dialog. How did I get to the place I am today? I didn’t start out in this line of work. Well, of course, many things contribute to our journey. So in telling this story, I had to start out by going back to my roots. Family, our environment, community, and our own choices all play a role. As I reflected on my very first jobs as a babysitter and a dishwasher, I remembered this special moment from over fifty years ago. I’ll share bits and pieces for you as I write along, so please check back in from time to time. Remember: Every “thing” is a story if we have eyes to see.
I remember specifically the winter that Vickie and I wanted to buy something special for our mother for Christmas. On several occasions, she had mentioned needing a new winter coat and that she would love to have a 3/4-length one. The fancy dress shop in town had the perfect one. It might have been more than what she wanted – a stylish beige crushed velvet 3/4-length coat. It was beautiful and was way over our budget. But we each could pay a quarter of the cost and decided to ask Daddy if he could chip in the other half for Kathy and Karin. (Note that I said “could” and not “would.”) We knew family funds were tight and were a bit nervous to ask, but Vickie and I went to him together with our proposal. I think he might have been quite impressed that we had saved half of the money. He opened up his wallet and handed Vickie the other half. We were so excited to go back to the store where more well-off people shopped and proudly handed over cash for Mother’s special gift. The sales clerk placed the bulky coat in the biggest box I had ever seen, beautifully wrapped it, and topped it off with the biggest bow I had ever seen – just like royalty! What fun we had placing it under the tree that Christmas; and best of all, Mother loved it.
